At the end of 2018, Gerhard Schick, then a member of the Bundestag and financial market policy spokesman for the Party Alliance 90/The Greens (Die Grünen), gave up his Bundestag mandate to establish an NGO dedicated to reforming the financial markets - the Bürgerbewegung Finanzwende. His thesis: The influence on legislation toward a fairer and more sustainable financial market would be stronger if there were a truly powerful campaign and research organization in Germany.
The Schöpflin Foundation has been supporting this project from the very beginning. Our common goal was and is to bring the complex topic of the financial markets closer to the citizens, to draw attention to abuses and to show what a stable, fair financial system can look like. Whether Wirecard or Cum Ex - the international scandals of the last few years have once again demonstrated how important it is to have a civil society and non-party organization that can act as a counterweight to the financial lobby. Finanzwende has established itself as a powerful player in this field.
In this anniversary video, the actors involved explain what motivated them to found or support Finanzwende, and our founder Hans Schöpflin also gives his views (video is in German language): »Wie wir auszogen, um die Finanzlobby das Fürchten zu lehren: 5 Jahre Finanzwende - YouTube«
We warmly congratulate Gerhard Schick and the entire team on the fifth anniversary of this important initiative and look forward to our further collaboration!
