Why is it easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of Amazon? How many tons of goods actually circulate around the world every day? What is a data lake? Who works in an Amazon warehouse and what do they think about their work? These are some of the questions addressed in a theater project by the artists of »Rimini Protokoll« and »Peng! Kollektiv«. »La Danse d’Amazon« deals with the phenomenon of the online mail order company Amazon, the changes in the world of work and the value of data. In an artistic way, the two theater groups use the example of Amazon to offer a contribution to the debate on the political-critical examination of the large technology corporations of our time. The piece is the result of elaborate, almost journalistic-investigative research, including at Amazon itself, which ultimately leads to a theater that provides enlightenment, involves the audience and stimulates reflection. To kick off rehearsals, there will be a symposium in Berlin in early June 2023.
The theater project is a first-time collaboration between members of two groups whose approaches at first seem contradictory, but who share a common concern. The theater label »Rimini Protokoll« expands the means of theater to create new perspectives on reality. It develops stage plays, interventions, scenic installations and radio plays, often with experts who have tested their knowledge and skills beyond the theater. »Peng! e.V.« is a group of artists, activists, craftsmen and scientists in Berlin. The collective offers subversive action art with the aim to move civil society to bolder campaigns and to raise political awareness.
»La Danse d’Amazon« is jointly funded in the program areas Economy & Democracy and Media & Society. The critical questioning of large tech corporations with regard to their role in the subversion of democracy is a thematic focus in the work of the program area Economy & Democracy. »La Danse d’Amazon« takes part in the public discourse in the form of a performative offer, both in production and in mediation. In this way, the funding complements the portfolio of the program area Media & Society, which is constantly concerned with the question of how the public can be acted upon and included.
