"New start for ÖRR - how to continue with 'our' media?

16.02.23

Under the title "New Start ÖRR: How to Continue with 'Our' Media?", the IfM is organizing a media policy conference on the reform of public broadcasting with the Schöpflin Foundation and the initiative »Our Media«. The prominent expert dialogue with ARD, media policy, science and civil society on participation in public service media will take place in Berlin on February 27, 2023.

The Patricia Schlesinger case has plunged not only rbb, but public broadcasting as a whole, into what is probably the biggest crisis of its existence. The extent of nepotism, advantage-taking and wastefulness of which the former director of Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg is accused has triggered a crisis of identity and acceptance for an entity that has already been repeatedly criticized. Since then, there has been talk of a "new foundation" for public media with greater involvement of society - but the question remains as to how this new start can be implemented.

At the conference, key stakeholders from the media, politics and civil society will discuss contemporary models for organizing social participation in "our" media. We hope that the event will provide impetus for the future of media oriented toward the common good and financed on the basis of solidarity, as well as concrete reform steps for the ÖRR.

Participants from our side will be our executive director Tim Göbel and Lukas Harlan, program director of the funding area Media & Society, as well as Maria Exner, founding director of Publix, our House for Journalism & the Public in Berlin.
