The Mercator Foundation Switzerland becomes a founding partner of Publix. Over three years, the Swiss foundation will support the development and program work of our House for Journalism and the Public in Berlin-Neukölln with a total of € 300,000.
Publix is a laboratory for innovation in journalism. Spanning 5,000 square meters and six floors, Publix gathers media professionals, editorial teams and civil society organizations and provides the infrastructure to try out nonprofit journalism in a practical way. Publix is intended to have an impact across Europe and strengthen media diversity internationally. It is intended to be a place where new formats for exchange between journalism, civil society, politics, science and the public are found. Confirmed users of Publix include Reporters Without Borders Germany, CORRECTIV, the Open Knowledge Foundation, HateAid and the journalists' association Netzwerk Recherche. Swiss media professionals are also expected to enrich Publix and benefit from the jointly developed impulses. The house will begin operations in 2024.
By supporting Publix, Foundation Mercator Schwitzerland is intensifying its cross-border commitment to initiatives that strengthen nonprofit journalism. The foundation does not support individual media titles or research organizations, but ideas, experiments and further training that benefit the sector as a whole - and thus democracy in Europe.
