Climate protection concerns all of us. Hence, Schöpflin Foundation is increasing its efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and at the same time compensate for non-avoidable emissions. To this end, this year we have donated 14,000 euros to the local "Lörrach Climate Fund" to compensate for our own emissions for the current year.
For us, it is a logical step to provide compensation through an association in Lörrach that supports regional climate protection projects. The Lörrach Climate Fund was created from the local "Climate Round Table" as an initiative by citizens for citizens and is thus a pioneering project throughout Germany. Its goal is to create more opportunities for local citizens and businesses to reduce their carbon footprint. According to calculations by climate experts, each person should emit no more than 1.1 tons of CO2 a year into the atmosphere in order to have any realistic chance of slowing down global warming. Those who do not succeed in doing so are given the opportunity to donate to climate protection measures through the Climate Fund. Concrete projects supported by the fund include the restoration of a moor in the Black Forest, the construction of a photovoltaic system on a school in Lörrach or the promotion of agroforestry projects.
For us as a foundation, voluntary compensation is a building block on the path to greater ecological sustainability. An internal analysis of our own carbon footprint is currently underway, on the basis of which further steps to reduce emissions can be initiated. The foundation is thus following the principle recommended by experts of first analyzing, then reducing, and finally compensating for unavoidable emissions.
