How Can Our State Remain Capable and Future-Proof? This is the central question driving the Re:Form initiative, launched by our Grantee ProjectTogether — a broad alliance of representatives from politics, administration, business, and civil society. In its latest appeal, »For a Future-Oriented State: Call for a Bold State Reform«, the network demands an efficient, digital, and citizen-focused administration.
Among the 200 initial signatories is our Foundation’s President, Tim Göbel: »As a non-profit foundation, we are committed to strengthening democracy. A capable state is its foundation — it must tackle challenges, enable progress, and build public trust. This requires bold reforms now.« Without these reforms, pressing future challenges — ranging from climate protection and digitalization to education and social security — cannot be effectively addressed. All signatories agree: the status quo is not an option.
A future-ready state sets clear goals, operates efficiently, and takes an active role in shaping progress. This vision is reflected in the key proposals of the appeal:
- More effective division of responsibilities in the federal system – granting municipalities greater flexibility
- Citizen-centered, efficient, and digital administration
- Impact-driven use of public funds instead of blanket budgeting
- Laws developed and reviewed in collaboration with municipalities and affected communities
- More attractive working conditions in the public sector to attract top talent
- Partnerships with businesses, civil society, and academia to tackle major challenges together
A capable state is not just a vision for the future — it must be built today. This requires clear political leadership from the next federal government. The goal of this appeal is to ensure that much-needed state and administrative reforms become a top priority in the coalition agreement.
