Campfire Festival 2019 a huge success!

06.09.19

Thousands of people took the opportunity at the Campfire Festival on the last weekend of August to talk to fellow festival-goers about journalism and democracy as well as other current issues such as climate change and digitalisation. And it wasn’t just journalists and media professionals who came: the colourful ‘tent city’ that sprung up in front of the Düsseldorf state parliament building also attracted many interested citizens too.

The programme of events in the Schöpflin Foundation tent was very well received. There were almost full houses for the many workshops and panel discussions which covered themes such as: »Flight and Journalism«; »Constructive Journalism«; and »Non-Profit Journalism or Alternative Offerings and Media Criticism«.  Attendees were given exciting insights into the work of the various projects and there were stimulating exchanges between the different panellists. Once again this demonstrated the relevance and the timeliness of the three themes – both for those in the media industry as well as for society as a whole.

In addition to the varied programme of events in the tents, on Sunday there were also two network meetings. On Sunday morning, players from the field of Constructive Journalism came together in the state parliament building for various workshops. A particular highlight was the first ever national »Network Meeting of Media-Makers in Exile«, organised by our grantee, AMAL Berlin! About 50 journalists with a migration or refugee background came together to discuss their work, the mutual challenges they face and ways to overcome these challenges. You can find more information on this event in the report and the video by AMAL, Berlin!

The Campfire Festival 2019 once again demonstrated that journalism makes a crucial contribution to a living democracy and is a fundamental prerequisite for an open society. We would like to thank all our partners and guests for their participation and exciting insights. But above all we would like to thank our grantee, Correctiv, for organising this unique festival.
