AlgorithmWatch works to shape the social and legal frameworks governing algorithms and artificial intelligence so that these systems benefit everyone—not just a privileged few. The organization pursues its mission through evidence-based advocacy:
Evidence: Drawing on scientific research, investigative journalism, and policy analysis, AlgorithmWatch examines how the development and use of algorithms and AI affect people and society.
Advocacy: Based on this evidence, the organization develops policy recommendations and advances them through policy advocacy, public campaigns, and strategic communications. Through educational and public awareness initiatives, it helps build a broader understanding of the issues it addresses.
AlgorithmWatch's work focuses on three key areas:
1. AI & Fundamental Rights: When algorithms and AI make decisions – protecting fundamental rights and ensuring accountability.
2. AI, Society & Democracy: Algorithms and AI in public discourse – protecting people and defending democracy.
3. AI, Power & Sustainability: Algorithms and AI between power and sustainability – preventing abuse and advancing justice.
The interest that AlgorithmWatch has seen in this issue, both among the general public and from politicians and the business community, speaks for itself: There is a clear need for automated decision-making systems to be properly and critically monitored and for there to be a thorough democratic assessment of the systems. AlgorithmWatch works with the right mix of technology, regulation and appropriate supervisory authorities.
AlgorithmWatch analyses the effects of algorithm systems on human behaviour and then highlights any ethical issues. In order properly to establish the work of AlgorithmWatch and its long-term impact, its advocacy work is vital as this ensures that the messages are clearly and effectively delivered to journalists, decision-makers in the worlds of politics and business, as well as to a broad cross-section of the general public. It is with this important awareness and advocacy work that we would like to support AlgorithmWatch.
