What does Relevanzreporter do?

Relevanzreporter is a local journalistic weekly magazine in Nuremberg. The service is purely digital, actively involves users and is distributed via a website, social media, a free newsletter and podcast formats. The editorial team also focuses on various event formats in the local area, where people from the region are brought together in a constructive exchange. The team consists of 20 media professionals - all of whom are professionally trained and have between four and 40 years of professional experience. Relevanzreporter is a GROW Fellow from 2020.

Why are we awarding a grant to Relevanzreporter?

Relevanzreporter brought constructive journalism to German local journalism and has been producing future-oriented, solution-oriented and public interest-oriented journalism on topics that will still be relevant tomorrow, together with the citizens of the region. Not only the research, but also the entire offering (design, name and even the payment model) was developed with the users. This community-based local approach makes them the first and so far only local media service in Germany, as well as anchoring social impact in the business plan.

What is our mutual goal?

Studies show that the democratic relevance of journalism is particularly important in regional and local areas, where news media have been struggling with structural challenges for years. New local offerings such as Relevanzreporter can help to bring more diversity back into reporting and motivate citizens to become more engaged, politically involved and interested in public discourse. Thanks to the participatory approach to journalism and creative digital community development, Relevanzreporter also ensure innovation in the media sector.
