CORRECTIV’s Major Investigation: »Akten des Missbrauchs« (Files of Abuse)

This is the most extensive investigation in CORRECTIV’s history. Over the course of eight years, the non-profit media organization analyzed documents from around the world and interviewed people affected by sexual abuse to examine how the Catholic Church has handled allegations of sexual abuse within its ranks. A particular focus of the investigation was the role of the Vatican.

Comprehensive Accountability Remains Difficult

At the heart of the investigation are internal correspondences between bishops and the Vatican from various countries, including Germany, Italy, Australia, the United States, and Colombia. These documents show that cases of sexual abuse were reported to Rome, recorded there, and formally processed. At the same time, the records reveal that decisions were often delayed or, in some cases, not made at all.

In certain instances, priests accused of abuse remained in active ministry. The documents also show cases in which previously imposed sanctions were lifted. Many of the most relevant records are held in the Vatican archives. Because access to these archives remains restricted, a comprehensive examination of the numerous abuse cases is extremely difficult.

Call for Greater Transparency

Based on its findings, CORRECTIV is calling for broader access to the Vatican archives, an independent international review of abuse cases, and greater transparency in dealing with both historical and current allegations. More than 4,000 people have already joined this call. Those who wish to add their support can do so here.

In addition, CORRECTIV is presenting the investigation »Akten des Missbrauchs« (Files of Abuse) in several formats. Alongside the journalistic publication, the story behind the investigation will be released as a book, adapted for the stage by Schauspiel Köln, and screened as a documentary film in selected independent cinemas from 31 March onwards. The aim is to make the findings accessible to a broad audience and to create different ways of engaging with the issue.

The investigation »Akten des Missbrauchs« (Files of Abuse) and further information about the project are available on CORRECTIV’s website.
