How can a place for journalism and public discourse strengthen democratic debate? What kinds of collaborations emerge when media, civil society and academia come together under one roof? Publix’s first Impact Report, »Where People Create Impact«, provides answers to these questions.

Our subsidiary organisation looks back on its first full year of operation in the report. Since opening in September 2024, Publix in Berlin-Neukölln has established itself as a place for work, exchange and innovation for public-interest journalism and civic engagement. At the heart of the report are the people who bring Publix to life: Residents, project partners, Fellows and funders share their experiences, collaborations and projects. Their perspectives show how new networks emerge, how journalistic work is supported and how new impulses for public debate are created.

The report highlights four key areas of impact: strengthening public-interest journalism, fostering social cohesion, building technological expertise in journalism, and promoting media and news literacy among children and young people. It provides insights into the work of around 30 organisations based at Publix and explores new business and funding models for journalism, formats that address contentious issues in society, and initiatives that strengthen people’s ability to engage with technological developments and digital media.

The Impact Report is therefore not only a review of Publix’s first full year of operation, but also offers insights into how places like Publix can help strengthen spaces for democratic debate and access to information.
