What does Schule im Aufbruch do?

Schule im Aufbruch (»Schools on the move«) supports schools across Germany in developing into future-ready learning environments — places where young people not only acquire knowledge, but also experience self-efficacy, take on responsibility, and build future skills. This empowers them to actively shape society. Founded in 2012, the non-profit organization brings together an interdisciplinary team of over 70 full-time and freelance staff members, including education and innovation experts as well as organizational and strategy developers. A key lever is the FREI DAY learning format, which embeds future-oriented, self-directed learning into everyday school life and integrates the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a central reference point in the curriculum.
In addition, the organization offers Transformation Support, a two-year process through which schools are guided in developing a shared vision and translating effective teamwork and agile working methods into impactful practice. More than 400 schools across Germany, over 33,000 students, and around 2,400 teachers are already part of this growing movement for a school that empowers children and young people to actively shape the world of tomorrow.

Why are we awarding a grant to Schule im Aufbruch?

The time has come for a paradigm shift in our schools. Schule im Aufbruch has developed and tested concepts aimed at »system change«. Now a professionalization process is on the way. In order to pass on ideas, experience and know-how, Schule im Aufbruch is establishing a nationwide office, three regional project offices and a training academy.

What is our mutual goal?

Our society is undergoing major transformation processes — yet the education system often remains stuck in outdated structures. Schule im Aufbruch addresses this challenge with innovative formats, systemic guidance, and a deep commitment to responsibility and the unfolding of individual potential. Through its five dedicated academies, Schule im Aufbruch has already trained around 70 Transformation Guides who professionally support schools on their journey of internal and external change. Together, we aim to secure the organization’s visionary mission — its radical focus on genuine transformation and its extensive experience in implementation support — on a long-term institutional basis. We hope that the momentum created by transformed schools and their networks will contribute to a lasting impact on the educational discourse and the education system in Germany.
