News literacy is becoming increasingly important in times of disinformation and fake news, but also due to the rapid spread of social media as the »leading medium« – especially for young people. The media literacy taught in schools is often insufficient to distinguish trustworthy sources from dubious ones and to assess the weighting of individual opinions. This is where the educational programme SPREUWEIZEN comes in: the news literacy initiative offers seminars and workshops as well as educational materials for students from the 8th grade onwards and for teachers.
In the program area »Learning & Participation«, we focus on initiatives that anchor future competencies more strongly in schools; whether through innovative and new forms of learning, different approaches to learning environments, the strengthening of participation in the school context, or through topics prepared and offered by our grantees for schools. News literacy and the proper use of media are a central prerequisite for acquiring knowledge and raising awareness.
Being informed and forming fact-based opinions are the foundation for democratic discourse and democratic action. CCritical news consumption and competent media use are therefore important skills that young people need to find their way in the world and form independent opinions. Without this competence, it is difficult to become a responsible democratic citizen – and these are exactly the kind of people we need for a healthy and future-proof democracy. In the coming years, the program is set to expand to more schools and federal states, particularly in eastern Germany.
