How can I recognize fake news? Which sources are trustworthy? And how should I proceed when researching a specific topic? To answer exactly these questions, our new Grantee »SPREUWEIZEN« (Die Rederei) offers workshops and teaching materials for school lessons starting from the eighth grade. The aim is to teach students how to deal with media, journalism and politics in a practical and playful way.
Social media has fundamentally changed the way young people consume news. They rely almost exclusively on social media channels for information. However, on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok, anyone can create content and make it accessible to others. The risk arises when false information—so-called fake news—is spread, and subjective perceptions are not clearly distinguished from facts. To separate the wheat from the chaff, a critical eye and strong news literacy are essential. This is precisely where the »SPREUWEIZEN« educational program by »Die Rederei« comes in. Through its seminars, workshops, and educational materials, it offers innovative approaches to digital media education in schools.
With around 200 workshops per year, »SPREUWEIZEN« reaches approximately 5,200 young people and 100 teachers. To expand its impact, we at the Schöpflin Foundation support »Die Rederei« with €100,000 annually, enabling them to conduct more workshops, particularly in eastern German states.
